1) Canada/UK Task Force on Children's Mental Health
In February 2005, Medaca, together with Senator Michael Kirby and the Global Business and Economic Roundtable on Addiction and Mental Health convened an international summit to discuss potential solutions to the current crisis in children’s mental health care.
Described as a major "breakthrough" for children's health care, the summit attracted 20 leading psychiatrists, advocates, business executives and government officials from Canada and Europe to discuss Canada’s health care system and its treatment of children. As a result of the summit, participants submitted an open letter on children’s mental health to Canada’s premiers. The letter comprised a number of far-reaching reform recommendations.
From 2005-2008, Medaca’s chairman, Dr. Richard Guscott, and its president, Chris Anderson, were co-chairs of the the Canada/UK Task Force on the Mental Health of Children. Working in close co-operation with the Global Business and Economic Roundtable on Addiction and Mental Health, the task force brought together mental health professionals from both countries to share ideas and best practices aimed at improving the current system of delivering mental health care services in Canada. Dr. Guscott and Mr. Anderson are also senior advisors to the roundtable’s scientific advisory council.
In 2006, Dr. Guscott and Mr. Anderson travelled to Cambridge University in the United Kingdon to interview leading practitioners and politicians responsible for building a much improved community approach to children’s mental health in that country.
Medaca contributes participates in a wide range of conferences and seminars to discuss issues that have an impact on the quality of mental health access and care in Canada.
